The Kentucky Derby is a famous American horse race, reserved for exemplary thoroughbred horses three years old or older, and is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, the first Saturday in May during the two week long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race takes place on a track a quarter mile (2 km) long at Churchill Downs.
The race is known as the “Two Most Exciting Minutes in Sports” by its approximate duration and also is called “The Run for the Roses” because of the garland of roses given to the winner.
